Note:
Vanuatu was called the New Hebrides until the country gained its independece
in 1980.
The islands are a volcanic arc: the New Hebrides arc created by the New Hebrides subduction zone, where the Australian plate is being subducted. The New Hebrides Plate is part of a complex back-arc system to the east of the Fiji Plate, and often considered part of the Fiji Plate.
The New Hebrides Trench extends from New Guinea to the east-southeast.
